Who turned on the oven?

After spending almost all of Saturday trying to get the house back into order after neglecting it all week, I was going stir crazy by Sunday. I decided I’d do part of my workout on the treadmill/elliptical and then finish outside with a little jogging stroller action. It was already 81 degrees and 84% relative humidity when we stepped outside at 9:45, so it was as pleasurable as you’d imagine. Running hills with the stroller is such good exercise though, and it’s been awhile since I’ve done it.

I was drenched in sweat when we walked in the door. The heat must have cooked my brain a little bit because going in the lake actually sounded somewhat appealing, and I asked Em if she wanted to go swimming. Before the words even finished coming out of my mouth, the kid shot off like a bullet and returned with bathing suit in hand.

I put on my courage suit, and in we went. Princess enjoyed floating on the raft more than being in the water, so she sat on top while I pushed her around. A twig brushed up again my leg causing one minor freak-out moment, but otherwise it was pretty relaxing.

Did you know there was such a thing as freshwater clams? I didn't.

Later that afternoon, I did what most sensible people would do on a hot summer afternoon….fired up the oven to replace my freezer stash of muffins. We made a dozen Cauliflower Chocolate Chip Muffins (love, love this recipe, although I've made some more modifications since I first posted it) and a dozen fresh peach & yogurt muffins.

The whole affair necessitated the vacuuming and steam mopping of the kitchen floor again for a second time within less than 24 hours. There was actually batter stuck on the ceiling light fixtures by the time we were done, but oh well. These are the times to remember after all.

How's your week going? What were some of your favorite summer time activities as a kid?

  1. You are a brave soul for going running at 9:45 in the morning. to hot for me!

I did know that there was such a thing as fresh water clams. I spent a lot of time in the lake at my Papa's house when I was a kid. .. these days I don't really like lakes - you can't see the bottom..and that freaks me out. I'd rather jump into 100ft of ocean water than 5 ft of black lake water. No thanks.

  2. I snorted about the batter on the light fixtures. There are totally batter spots on my ceiling. And I don't even have a pint-sized helper to blame.

Glad you're surviving the heat! A dip in the lake sounds glorious.

  3. Those chocolate chip muffins sound interesting...but they must be good if you are still making them after you posted them way back in the day!

Twigs are gross, I would have freaked out too...! Ha.

  4. Normally I don't get excited when I see a muffin recipe on a blog, but really, you have to try the cauliflower ones, Kier.

I'm just like you Jena. Sharks, sting rays, ocean critters...meh, no biggie. Something brushing up again my leg in a lake, and watch me jump 10 feet out of the water.

At least you have pets Shelby. You can always blame them :)

  9. I agree with Jena about you being brave to venture out at 9:45. Lately even in MN I feel like my normal early morning run is too hot. I suppose I'm wimpy. :-( Alll the muffins sound splendid. I totally need to restock my baked goods stash too!

  10. I love swimming in the lake. I still get a little skeeved by weeds, but have gotten over my fear of creatures. Oceans frighten me though!

I can relate to the oven...my husband decided to make lasagna this week. The hottest week I can recall in my life. Yes, lets turn on the oven for almost an hour! Great idea. It was good though :)

  11. How's the heat treating you now? Sometimes I fill up the kid's pool with dish soap and make monster suds-keeps them cool & they think mom is awesome!

  12. Nice guns! I'm jealous, you would think lifting 2 kids up constantly would give me nicer arms. :)

    Like the new design too.
