A Chain Reaction

How you doin’?

Not much has been going on around here. We’ve been homebodies the past couple weekends. Last Sunday we had a bunch of people over to celebrate Mr. Blondie’s birthday. We did some swimming in the lake, BBQ’d, and consumed many margaritas.

Note to self: It may have worked in college, but red wine is not a good cocktail chaser.

Today we had a lunch/swimming date with a fellow pilot-wife friend and her family. They live in the burbs on the opposite side of the Atlanta, so it’s a treat when we can manage to meet-up.

This morning I also went to my first spin class in forever.

Yep, I joined a gym again . HoleintheWall Gym near our house wasn’t willing to work with me to waive the initiation fee or do a short term contract, so I took my business up the street to SuperMegaChain Gym.

Their membership numbers must have taken a hit with the economy because there’s no longer an initiation fee, and it’s $10/month cheaper than the last time I was a member there. Plus they have group classes (spinning, yay!), babysitting, and a pool. The three things I need most at the moment. It’s also a month-to-month deal, so I can always cancel if it ends up being that inconvenient.

Lately my workouts have consisted of running for 25-30 minutes, then 30 minutes on the elliptical or one of Jillian’s workouts.

Rare run that ended with some dry spots on my shirt.

Remember when I told you how great the compression sleeves have been working to control my calf cramps? Well my calves feel great, but they must alter my gait in some way. The top and side of my left foot has started hurting. Taping my foot with KT Tape reduces the pain in my foot, but then my lower shin starts aching about a mile into my runs.

The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.

Maybe it’s time to admit I’ve got some type of overuse injury and stop running. Sound like a good idea? Yes, I agree.

Tomorrow I’m going to attempt aqua jogging. I’m nervous about it. The gym pool is really outside my comfort zone.

I have a fun 5k planned for next Saturday. Not sure what I’m going to do about that yet. I’ll be meeting a bunch of local bloggers there then going out for lunch afterwards. Hopefully my desire not to look like a swamp monster at the restaurant will be enough to overcome my desire to truly push the race.

  1. This is Whiteorchid. I'm sorry you're dealing with injuries. I feel like I'm going through the same thing, although this tendinitis has been more long term. I think this is the worst time to deal with injuries. Summer training is supposed to be the laid back time between races when we can stick to long term training plans. Let me know how you like aqua jogging. I've been thinking about trying it. Try to rest those legs! You're still my idol!

  3. Aw, that was sweet Melissa. Isn't it frustrating? I hope we're both back in fighting shape by the fall. We can do it :)

  4. Thanks for the suggestion Wendy. It took me a long time to get on the band wagon, but I really like the Jillian DVD's. I'll probably be adding some more soon. The like the compound moves she uses. You get a big workout in such a short time.

  5. Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that you may need some time off. I know how that goes, and it totally stinks. Hope you're back to normal running soon.

  6. Gah - it feels like some sort of injury that prevents us from running is just bouncing from person to person! I hope everything heals up quick!

  7. Injuries are just no fun, and neither is being forced to take time off. Have you seen anyone for it yet? Sometimes I would be so worried about an ache or pain, and it ended up being a quick fix once I saw my running doc.

Also, your arms are JACKED! Awesome.

  8. This almost makes me want to join a gym... because I love spinning!

It's amazing how the smallest changes, like your compression socks, can lead to injuries. I've been having pain in my ankle/foot too. I think it stems from an old ankle sprain. Ugh!

Hopefully your foot feels fine again soon, and have fun at your blogger meet up! (:

  9. I know it Kier and Brit. You two just recovered and now it's trickling over to me. Ugh.

Thanks Sarah! I rarely do any formal upper body work, it's just lucky genetics. If only my legs would get that cut.

I'm giving it a few more weeks before I see a doctor. With our insurance I'd end up paying hundreds of dollars to get a diagnosis, and most most likely the treatment will be rest anyway.

  10. You're doing the right thing re: the injury. Treating it before its too late is so helpful, but runners rarely have that kind of mentality. Hope it feels better soon!

  11. I think you're making a good decision! Better to back off a bit now then end up with a bad injury!

  12. If I start to feel an injury coming on, I usually don't say it out loud to anyone right away. Particularly my husband because he will say "why don't you stop running?" Yes, that would make sense. I don't want anyone to tell me to stop!

You are doing the right thing as hard as it is. I think it's much harder to take time off than it is to train.

  13. I know Bree! I was icing on the sly in the bathroom at first, so Mr. Blondie wouldn't say "I told you so".

  14. Whenever I've done aqua jogging I can't help but laugh at myself. It's fun but feels really weird!! I can't help but have this huge smile on my face doing it, people must think I really love it. I hope it works for you and is less awkward!
