Another "Which Would You Do?" Race Question

Please Note: This post is totally being filed under #firstworldproblems

So a few weeks ago I decided I was definitely, 100% sure I was going to run the Savannah Rock and Roll Half Marathon on November 5th. The RnR series is running a promo tomorrow for National Running Day and the registration is discounted to $72. Tomorrow I was going to pull the trigger and register.

Then I was looking at upcoming races on active and rungeorgia.com to map out the rest of my fall racing schedule. I see the local road race I did last year and the year before is also on November 5th. Frowny face. Even Mr. Blondie was a bit disappointed when I told him this. This would be my third time running it since we moved here. It's a big neighborhood event and everyone comes out to volunteer and cheer.

If I did the local 15k race on November 5th, then I would also run the Silver Comet Half Marathon the weekend prior to it. I already ran it two years ago, so I know the conditions would be right for a PR race. It's a flat, fast course. About as good as it gets here in Atlanta. I could probably place in the top 3 for my age group, if not win it. (It's a smallish race, they cap it at 2000 runners).

Still with me here?

Savanah RnR Pro's:
  • Inaugural year- cool to be part of that
  • Always wanted to visit Savannah, we'd make a Bed & Breakfast type weekend out of it
  • Flat course, cool temps that time of year- potential to PR
  • A Team MARATHON Bar event. Good opportunity to represent the brand and meet fellow teammates.
  • I'd be a Heavy Medal Groupie
Local 15K Pro's:
  • Big neighborhood event
  • Has sentimental value, haven't missed a year since we moved here
  • Could run the Silver Comet Half the weekend before
  • Flat course, cool temps that time of year- potential to PR
  • Less expensive
The Miami RnR Half in December would be another option if I didn't do Savannah, but I've done a ton of races in Miami and feel kinda meh about traveling there to race.

There's my lame-o dilemma. Now that I'm sharing this with the universe something is going to happen and I won't be able to either. Just you wait and see.

Remember the bread machine post? Yep, life can be tough sometimes :)

Anyway....given the above, what would you chose?

  1. I really want to do the silver comet half but it's the same day as the Atlanta marathon. I say stay local!

  2. Savanah RnR!! The bed and breakfast would win me over. Maybe you'll be able to see Paula Deen!! (I love her) lol

  3. It is tough when things you want to do conflict! Whether it's races or family functions, I often find myself wanting to be in two places at once. :-)

I cast my vote for doing the local race. I'm sentimental like that (and the cheaper price tag is good too.) RnR Savannah does sound cool - and it's someplace I've always wanted to go - but maybe there will be a future year where the races don't conflict? I know you'll have fun races no matter what you decide.

  4. I was all for voting local, but then you mentioned the RnR being a bed & breakfast weekend - that would be a lot of fun!

I am leaning towards local though...

  6. That's a tough one. There is a great local race here that I've had to miss for the past 3 years because of a work commitment. Boo. I'd say Savannah though....try something new! :)

  7. If you stay local, you can run two races right? the local 15K and the half the weekend before? Stay local and run the two races.

  8. While the inaugural savannah RNR would be fun, I would do the local 15 k and the silver comet half. I am fairly familiar with savannah, and the marathon and half marathon course are very disappointing. The run through the industrial sections, run down neighborhoods, and only a few miles of it is actually in the historic distric. You will also pass very few squares. This is the reason Jonathan and I decided not to do the race.

The first Saturday in December, the is the annual Savannah River Bridge Run. Its a 5k, 10k, and Double Pump (15k). The race is stroller friendly, they have a decent expo, and free beer at the end. 2 years when we ran it it was 45* race morning. The 10k route goes through historic areas, and over the big Talmadge Bridge twice. The 5k starts across the river in SC and runs over the bridge once and ends at the civic center. There is a free ferry boat ride across the river to the convention center where more than enough free parking is.

You could make that your B&B weekend.

  10. BTW, I'll be one of the crazy TNT coaches going the wrong direction on the course in San Diego. I'll also be wearing light-up purple stars on my head. Yell for me if you see me...since we are both bloggers, marathoners, and pilot wives, it won't seem creepy to say hi if we see each other. :)

  11. Seeing as how I've turned into a running slug while trying to conceive, I doubt I'll run Savannah, but a bunch of my friends are talking about it, and I very well may come and spectate, so if you run, I'll probably be there to cheer you on and we can actually meet!

  12. As you know, I'm having a similar debate with the Savannah race, although for different reasons. I actually think I'm going to do the Athens half-marathon in October instead. It's closer, cheaper and my husband will be able to come with me.

  13. Ginnie, thanks for the insight on Savannah. That other race sounds like a lot of fun too. I was envisioning southern planatations, magnolia tree, etc. Good to know that's not what I'd be seeing along the RnR course!

  15. WAIT! You can't decide yet, I didn't even get to put my .02 cents in!!!!!!! (Ha Ha jk).

I'll tell you anyways- I think you should stay local. I'm 100% for supporting local events. the RnR is coming to St. Pete and I'm refusing to run since it could potentially put our local race groups out of the playing field. I'm that weirdo, I guess.
