Racecation

Ok, I’ll admit I’m starting to feel a little burned-out. I’ve been pushing myself through every workout for the past 6 months with the thoughts of my next race. After the Georgia Half Marathon in a couple weeks, I’m going to unplug. I won't care about how fast I’m going, what my heart rate is, if I only reached 5.5 miles instead of 6 for the day.

Remember when running used to be simple?

I’ll slip on my shoes and run because I feel like it....stop when I don’t feel like it anymore.....be one with nature. Kumbaya.

Next month, the Mr. and I are going to do something we haven’t done in over 2 years. Go on a vacation by ourselves! Our plan? Show up at the airport with backpacks and passports, then pick a flight off the departure board. Prague, Amsterdam, and Barcelona are tops on our list. We’ll be on whatever flight is leaving first with first class seats available :) This has been my dream ever since Mr.Blondie started working for the airlines.

April will be my month to recharge. Then it’s back to business. This week I registered for the San Diego Rock and Roll Half in June.

This is another thing I haven’t done in a few years….a destination race. Oh how I’ve missed doing these. Our parents will be watching Emily for this one too. Wine tasting in Temecula, staying out late with friends, and oh yeah, a race thrown in there to kick it all off.

One of our friends is running his very first marathon, so I'll be there to help pace him towards the end of his race as well. Ooh, I can't wait.

Anyone else working on vacation plans? Can you recommend some destinations and travel guides we should be looking at?

  1. Your vacation sounds AMAZING! How fun to go to the airport not knowing where you will end up!

I love destination races, need to plan a few more of those soon!

  3. OMG! So jealous of your amazing vacation "plans." How wonderful to go to the airport and pick somewhere! What an adventure!

I've never done a destination race, but it sounds like a lot of fun!

  4. this sounds so good and necessary... starting over with #2 without a break like this after #1 is taking its toll. Hope I can do this soon!

  5. You have no idea how badly I have just wanted to head to the airport with my husband, pick a flight, and hop on it to another country! You'll have to tell me how that works. (can you ask for first class tickets if they're available?)

    Enjoy your time away!

  6. I'm not sure what we're getting ourselves into. I hope it ends up being fun. I'd have to say I'm equally as nervous as I am excited.

They'll automaticaly upgrade us if there are seats available. It makes such a difference on trans-atlantic flights, it'll be a big deciding factor on where we go :)

  7. So excited for your vacation! My sister and her friend traveled around Europe that way. They would hop on the next bus leaving town! I'm jealous of the freedom you have with DH working for the airlines. You'll have to blog while you're gone so we can live vicariously!

  8. That is such a fun idea! Talk about spontaneous!! I love Venice, but I want to go to Galloway the most :) We are going to Singapore and Thailand in June/July and Thailand is definitely on the top of my list!

P.S. Thank you for the well wishes...I am feeling better each day :)

  9. You'd be shocked what a regional pilot earns considering the immense job responsibility, skill, and the cost of education to even get started in the first place. The fringe benefits help make up for the lousy pay. I wouldn't mind a little steak and champagne on the way there TYVM :)

  10. Your vacation plans sound so much fun. I have been to Barcelona a few times and love it.
I hear you with the feel to go, go, go and not enjoying your workouts like you use to. I have been feeling the same way. I'm training for a relay marathon in May and Im looking forward to it but I just want to run to run. Not worry about how far Im going or how much time I have until I have.
Anyways, enjoy your trip and take care.

  13. Just pick a destination off the flight departure board? What an adventure -- you are going to have such a blast!

Ah, reading your blog and hearing about the Georgia half coming up in a few weeks is making me all nostalgic for when I ran Georgia last year while living in ATL. I lived two blocks down from Piedmont Park and two blocks over from Trader Joe's... not a bad deal!

  14. Sweaty- Did Americorp set up your housing? That's a sweet location to live.

RyRy- Are you doing the half too? It's totally on if you are.

  15. That sounds like my dream trip! I love fly by the seat of my pants travelling. It might be fun to look at South America destinations too. I wouldn't even know where to begin with that much openendedness in my itinerary. Have fun!

  16. The vacation sounds exciting. The most child-free vacation we've had in 11 years is an over-nighter here and there at a local hotel. We just don't have available sitters. We haven't been able to take advantage of Dan's flight benefits, either.

I like your idea of unplugging and just running because you want to run.
